Professional Hair Braiding Tips

Game-Changing Hacks That Will Teach You How to Braid Your Own Hair

If you think braiding your hair is easy, or comes naturally because our Anna Hair Braiding Barber and Salon professional hair braiding experts make it seem that way, then you are in for a rude awakening. If you want to try some simple braiding styles, then the following post is a must-read.

Second-day hair is best for braids

It is much easier to get your hair to do what you want when you put some product in it, not loads though. When your hair has just been washed, it is quite slippery. Plus, the braid will last longer if the hair is a couple of days old. You can try a pomade or hair wax that will add some grit to the area you want to braid. Dry shampoo and dry texture spray will also work to help get a good grip on your hair.

Practice your parting

The most important step of a good braid is a straight part. And you’ll need a rattail or pintail comb to get it right. Use the long wire end of the tool to create the part. Then, section off the hair with some clips so the hairs don’t wander back into the parting. When dealing with the back of your head? Use two mirrors, one stationary, and one handheld to see all the hard-to-reach areas better.

Detangle first

Knotty strands will cause your hair to snag and tangle while you try to braid it. Make sure to detangle all your sections from roots to ends before trying to braid. And clip away the sections you are not working on to avoid getting tangles midway through your plait.

Talk to yourself

Don’t be shy about coaching yourself when it comes to braiding your own hair, especially if you are just starting out. For a classic braid, you may recite something along the lines of “left over the middle, right over the middle” as you start to braid. If you want more volume, try adding in a few clip-in extensions.
